Mel Brown "Neck Bones and Caviar" Album Review

Neck Bones & Caviar, my review from Barcelona
I have read some professional reviews which takes this 'Neck Bones & Caviar' to be the best of Mel Brown's records, but personally I think of 'Homewreckin' as better. Nonetheless in both records Brown's performance is on a very good level, in my opinion and in that of the great Joe Louis Walker, who says that Brown is probably one of the greatest guitar players in any style. I find two themes in this `Neck Bones' that are not on the same level as the others: Z.Z.Hill's `You' re the one' and Ray Charles's 'I believe to my soul', both a little boring.
Also the record features a not very inspired Jim Bodreaux on drums. He takes some themes away from the Blues and gives them a rhythm somewhat "funky" as in Mel Brown's 'Summer magic', and still more noticeable in a slow classic Blues as St. Louis Jimmy Oden's 'Going down slow'. In general it is a good disk, with highlights as Muddy Water's 'Woman wanted', a perfect version of Allen Toussaint's 'Get out my live woman', the original 'I want to hold onto you, Baby' and 'Blues on the green', a great Blues, a very good version of 'Lord have mercy' where Brown plays the piano really well and closing the LP a version of John Lee Hooker's 'I' m in the mood' which begins somewhat enigmatic and finishes as a true piece of Blues. I give it between 3 and 3,5 stars.

Paul Sprawl "Blue Suitcase" Album Review

Great guitar work
I saw Paul at house party in California several years back and bought this CD from him. I give it 4 stars because some of the production is iffy, but there is no doubt about the man. The rhythm of the blues guitar, mello voice, and great lyrics make him a performer to watch. "Red Room" is a classic and worth the price of the CD.

Shuggie Otis "Here Comes Shuggie Otis and Freedom Flight" Album Review

In time you discover new yet old things...
"Strawberry Letter 22," as I stand corrected, is the correct title (just listen to the lyrics contain within this track, it's not "Strawberry Letter 23"); I just found out that "Shuggie" is the original author for this song, I guess I missed that one...

His song inspired was covered by The Brothers Johnson's hit makers of (A&M Records Label) da "FUNK" music... Thank god for the evolution of music...

*notably, "Shuggie" played on stage with my Uncle "Pee Wee" Crayton and his dad Johnny Otis Sr.; as well as, a host of legendary blues fellas at the 1970 Monterey Jazz Festival ("Live at Monterey" CD ~ Johnny Otis)... These songs are packed with lots of innovation and freedom of unlimited expression, exhilarating to say the least!

Sonny Landreth "Prodigal Son" Album Review

Incredible
Sonny never disappoints! What can I say?! He is one talented guitar player, not to mention song writer and singer!

Video Sonny Landreth-Congo-Square and About Him

Congo Square8.55 min!I made these clip from My favourites song.Eric Clapton about Sonny:"He is the most underestimated musician on the planet and also one of the most advanced!" Its from The double CD'Begegnungen(Meetings Live) 1996. A Double CD AND DVD from German Singer Peter Maffy with Guests as Sonny! GREAT CD/DVD! Technique Although Landreth is an extremely competent guitarist in the conventional form, it is his slide playing that he is most well known for. He has developed a technique where he also frets notes and plays chords and chord fragments "behind" the slide while he's playing. He has managed to perfect this form of playing like no other. Many a well known guitarist has left his shows shaking his or her head in amused disbelief. He plays with the slide on his little finger as most slide players do. It would be basically impossible to play this style with the slide on any other finger. Sonny Landreth is one of the most unique guitar players on the planet. He has developed an original style that has not been duplicated. His roots are found in the Blues and Zydeco of the Louisiana/Mississippi region, and he took those roots for a ride.Louisiana's Guitar Player: Born in Mississippi, relocated to Lafayette, Louisiana, Sonny Landreth was immersed in the great Swamp-pop and Zydeco music of the area. He picked up a variety of musical styles playing with some of the best musicians on the Louisiana scene, while developing his considerable songwriting skills. One of Sonny's first professional gigs was with Zydeco legend Clifton Chenier. Landreth's guitar capabilities landed him work as a sought-after session musician. He has played on records by John Hiatt, Bonnie Raitt, Zachary Richard, Freddy Fender, John Mahall, Kenny Loggins, Beausoleill, Junior Wells, Dolly Parton, Maria Muldaur, Allen Toussaint, and Mark Knopfler. He hasn't really played on a big hit record, but he has played vital roles in other artist's careers. The first thing guitar players do when they discover Sonny Landreth is scratch their heads and wonder how on earth he played what they just heard. He uses a slide but his strings are high off the frets and he is able to finger notes behind the slide. This totally unique style results in some of the most fascinating sounds heard from an electric guitar. Facilitating this new technique is a myriad of different tunings on his guitar. He uses so many different tunings that he has pioneered the use of an automatic guitar tuner mounted on his instrument. Sonny played the trumpet as a teenager and uses hints of the articulation of the instrument on the guitar. Although his grooves are typical Blues, Rock and Roll, and Zydeco beats, his approach uses his playing and songwriting to create a fresh new sound in roots music. Playing with just a bass player and a drummer, Landreth's sound can fill the biggest arenas and can stand toe-to toe with the biggest Rock acts. Probably the biggest wall of sound three musicians can erect. It can be very hard for a modern artist to have a distinctive voice in the Blues. Some fans expect a certain approach that relates to the artists of the past. Sonny Landreth has shown that he can take that approach and create new grooves and sounds that are unconventional yet knee-deep in the spirit of the Blues. Along with young artists like the North Mississippi Allstars, Sonny is taking the Blues and the guitar to the next level just like Muddy Waters and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Landreth has been working steadily for decades, amassing a devoted following among his fans and peers Sonny Landreth has performed on many other artists' albums, including albums from John Hiatt, Waterline, and The Goners. He has performed with Bonnie Raitt, Mark Knopfler, and Buddy Guy, among others. He has released at least nine solo albums: * Blues Attack (1981; re-released 1996) * Down in Louisiana (1986; re-released 1993) * Outward Bound (1992) * South of I-10 (1995) * Crazy Cajun Recordings (1999) - source material from 1973 and 1977 * Prodigal Son: The Collection (2000) - source material from 1973 and 1977 * Levee Town (2000) * The Road We're On (2003) * Grant Street (2005) - live recording SOME "SONNY LINKS": http://www.sonnylandreth.com http://www.sonnyskrewe.org/ http://www.sonnylandrethfan.com/ http://www.246.ne.jp/%7Ebayou/sonnylandreth.html
